Retaining walls help Coevorden stay dry
Waterschap Vechtstromen had an emergency storage facility built near the Ossehaar planning area to ensure that Coevorden residents and businesses stay dry in the event of flooding. This storage facility can temporarily hold over 400,000 m3 water. For this project, Bosch Beton supplied a large number of L retaining walls with heel, varying in height from 2 to 4 metres.
Waterschap Vechtstromen started a partnership with Van Heteren Weg- en Waterbouw to implement this project in Coevorden.
Prefabricated retaining walls
Bosch Beton supplied prefabricated concrete retaining walls in two phases for this large project: some eighty L200 retaining walls with heel of 2 to 4 metres wide and a further seventy L100 retaining walls of 4 metres wide. We shortened, mitred and created recesses in some of the walls at our Barneveld factory and our own Engineering department produced the required drawings. For the wall placement we worked together with one of our regular drivers.
Emergency storage
The 60 ha emergency storage facility on the outskirts of Ossehaar can hold over 400,000 m3 water temporarily during periods of extremely high water. Several changes were, however, needed to realise this emergency storage, requiring adaptations to the project area’s entire water system, including the associated weirs, seepage ditches, seepage ponds, constructing an intake structure with accompanying bridge and the construction of dikes.
Staying dry
The changing climate is resulting in periods with extreme precipitation as well as extremely dry periods. The flooding issues in Coevorden were investigated at the end of the 1990s. The Reassessment of Water Management Vechtstromen Noord (2015) and the NBW Assessment Vechtstromen Noord (2020) showed that the Ossehaar planning area has potential to store excess water temporarily during periods of extremely high precipitation. This reduces the flow of water toward Coevorden and keeps residents and companies dry in the event of flooding.
