Safe charging area for electric trucks thanks to fire-resistant retaining walls

In Wateringen, recycler Renewi has put its first charging area for electric trucks into operation. For this project, Bosch Beton supplied precast retaining walls that serve as fire-resistant partitions. With these walls, the charging area is protected against fire spread.

Electrification of the Truck Fleet

Renewi recycles millions of tons of waste every year, giving it a second life. At the same time, the company continuously seeks ways to reduce its own CO₂ footprint, aiming to halve emissions by 2030. Electrifying its vehicle fleet is an important step towards achieving this goal. For this project, Renewi teamed up with Batenburg Techniek to work together on the development of advanced charging areas.

Fire-Resistant Retaining Wall Solution

Ensuring the safety of the charging area was a key focus during this project, with fire prevention being a top priority. Renewi and Batenburg Techniek therefore opted to install fire-resistant retaining walls. For this project, we supplied 5-meter-high LHAK retaining walls, through our partner Henken Infra from Veenendaal, to Meijerink Wegenbouw from Bilthoven. These walls provide a minimum of 60 minutes of fire resistance. The walls create compartments between the 18 charging points on the site, helping to slow down the spread of fire.

Setting a New Standard

Together with Batenburg Techniek, Renewi is setting a new standard for safe charging in the waste and recycling sector. The Wateringen charging area is the first step, with additional sites planned in Amsterdam, Amersfoort, and other locations in the near future. The design of the Wateringen site also allows for potential future expansions, making it easy to add more fire-resistant retaining walls if needed.
