Egmond aan Zee Lighthouse Strengthened Sustainably with Retaining Walls

At Vuurtorenplein in Egmond aan Zee, Bosch Beton supplied retaining walls to protect the historic J.C.J. van Speijk Tower and stabilize the surrounding dunes. The project combines respect for heritage with a modern, sustainable solution, while keeping the impact on the landscape to a minimum.

A Beacon on the Coast

The J.C.J. van Speijk Tower is one of the oldest still-active lighthouses in the Netherlands and a well-known coastal landmark. Thanks to its central location near the boulevard, the tower is visible throughout the village, serving as a familiar point of reference for both residents and visitors.

Trust and Collaboration

The project was realized through a collaboration with the client Schakel & Schrale, under the primary responsibility of Rijkswaterstaat. Schakel & Schrale approached Bosch Beton early on with the request.

Strong and Sustainable Construction

A square concrete “box” made of L200HAK retaining walls was installed around the lighthouse. This was necessary because the existing wall could no longer support the dunes and was at risk of collapsing. An additional challenge was that as little dune material as possible could be moved or disturbed, which limited the working space. The chosen walls provide a functional and sustainable solution that can withstand the specific conditions of this coastal location.

A Modern Foundation for a Historic Monument

The project makes a valuable contribution to preserving this unique site. The combination of historic heritage and modern concrete solutions demonstrates how tradition and innovation can complement each other.
