Sustainable reinforcement of the Rijnkade in Arnhem with special retaining walls
To ensure that the Rijnkade in Arnhem meets future climate and high-water scenarios, construction consortium SAMEN (G. van der Ven, Ballast Nedam & Hakkers) worked on the dike reinforcement on behalf of the water authority Rijn en IJssel and the Municipality of Arnhem. This involved completely renovating the dike over a length of 1.2 kilometers. Special retaining walls from Bosch Beton were used for the reinforcement.
Sustainable and emission-free construction
The project in Arnhem is unique because of its almost completely emission-free working method. Virtually all work was carried out using electric equipment, which significantly reduces both CO2 emissions and noise pollution. This focus on sustainable construction was the reason for choosing Bosch Beton’s precast retaining elements. Our precast concrete elements do not have to be made on site, which saves considerable time and space on the construction site.
Challenging project
For this project, Bosch Beton designed special retaining walls together with the construction consortium. These retaining walls were brought in by water from a water hub outside the city to reduce transport movements in the Arnhem city center. Work began in the fall of 2023 and the new Rijnkade is expected to be completed in 2025. This renovation will soon allow the new Rijnkade to last another 100 years.
